Implicit racial bias and calls to fear Black people are a huge part of America's gun problem. In a nation increasingly armed to the teeth, more and more Black people are going to be shot in incidents similar to this one.
Racism is inextricably intertwined with gun culture and calls for more people to arm themselves.
That culture is irrational and dangerous. White people in the United States are not at any kind of significant risk from Black people. Violent crime has been on a steady downward
trajectory for decades.
We Americans are safe in our homes and on the streets, with respect to random violence. We are safer than our parents and grandparents.
So why all the calls to arm ourselves, especially when it's gun culture that is starting to turn our safety around?
I propose that the calls to arm ourselves are almost totally based on irrational fear stemming from racism.
