I'm very close friends with a gay man who was a student at the university where Kathleen Stock taught. He's given me a lot of insight into her resignation and the dishonest ways UK media spun it.
Nobody forced her to resign, but the vast majority of students in the university had no interest in taking her classes. People would change majors rather than have to sit through and regurgitate some of her anti-trans hate speech.
Young people in the UK, despite false media appearances, are not down with hating on trans people. They find it utterly unacceptable.
People I know at the University of Sussex tell me that the academy is not supposed to be a place that platforms hatred. They tell me Kathleen Stock is a transparently, pointedly hateful person. They tell me she has every right to speak, but they have every right not to associate with her or have to take classes from her in order to complete their degree programs.
You rarely see their point of view represented in UK media.
