I'm super glad he apologized! At least that's better than Pope Francis managed after he reinforced his ban (at two separate meetings) on gay men training for the clergy by complaining that gay seminary candidates are responsible for too much "fagotry" in the Church. The pope used an Italian word that Italian people say is every bit as shocking and demeaning as "fagotry" is in English. The Vatican sort-of-but-not-really apologized for the pope the first time. But two weeks later, when he said it again, a Vatican spokesman made clear that no apology would be forthcoming.

The pope taught the world that vile slurs like that against queer people are perfectly acceptable.

Heroes talk, children learn.

The pope is a hero to some children, and he's made it clear he personally thinks gay people are disgusting and deserving of disgusting epithets. Children are learning from him.

It's baseball player has started out by doing a little bit better. I hope he proves his sincerity by living out his apology for real.

We'll see!
