I’m sorry you have to put up with people thinking you’re mentally disabled. That’s terrible. One of my childhood friends had a mother who was deaf, and I used to spend a lot of time at their house, where ASL was used as much or more often than English.

I would personally never presume a deaf person had any cognition difficulty — not given how good my friend’s mom was at sussing out when we were up to no good. She seemed to share the common motherly attributes of ESP and eyes in the back of here head. lol

I just get frustrated because it’s like taking up space where a disabled person could have been instead.

I don’t know what that means. What does it refer to? What’s taking up space?
