I'm reminded of the Mormon teenage girl who wrote to me a few years ago describing how her community was isolating and excluding her because she's a lesbian.
She told me that everyone was always very nice to her, even if she sat home alone because she's not allowed to participate in group activities due to her sexual orientation.
She told me that she doesn't want people to be nice, she wants them to be good.
I think she was very much intuiting the difference between nice and kind.
