I'm remembering the interview I did with an older teenager and his mother who fled Florida for a homeless shelter in New York. She sold pretty much everything she owned and packed the rest into her car to drive them out of state, because her son's HRT had been cut off cold turkey and he was having a pretty bad reaction — increased levels of depression and self-harm thoughts.

I asked him what his doctor said about that, and he sounded perfectly sensible when he answered, (not his exact words, which are buried in my notes somewhere) —HRT can't help me with depression that's not caused by being trans. I know that. But losing access to HRT, especially cold turkey, caused mental and physical problems that tipped me over into a very bad place. That's when my mom decided she had to get us out of here.

Sounds to me like his doctors and counselors had given him very wise advice, and nobody had promised him HRT was a magic key to anything.
