I’m reading a history of archaic and classical Greece right now, and I just encountered a passage last night in which the author notes that the love Greek men felt for their wives was usually expressed as agape, while the love they felt for mistresses and male lovers was more often eros.

Except that with committed pairs of older/younger male lovers in the idealized pederasty system, we’re back to agape again, perhaps indicating the more life-long nature of the relationship.

But in any case, agape clearly could not have excluded sexuality, even it didn’t necessarily imply that it had to exist.
