I’m pretty comfortable in French. I read it almost as fast and easily as I read English. I watch movies without subtitles, and I’m actually better sometimes listening to French music and understand the lyrics than I am with English music.

But ….

Native speakers can confound me with dialect and slang if they want to. I don’t have that “insider” command of the language.
