I'm often surprised by how many people don't know this. People living with HIV who are in effective treatment don't become ill and can't pass the virus on through sex. "U = U" is the slogan, undetectable equals untransmissible.
That's why getting tested (then getting treated if necessary) is so important!
Anyway, I too remember the amazing social freedom of the pre-AIDS days, if you count the days when HIV was circulating but nobody really knew about it yet. We weren't free in those days like we are in many ways today. But, just emerging from the pre-Stonewall era of being essentially taboo, the decade or so after Stonewall felt amazing, maybe like anything was possible.
