I'm not terribly old, not quite elderly yet though pushing it, but I’m old enough to have had the tremendous good fortune (if that’s quite the right expression) to meet people who knew the pink triangle all too intimately.

Back in my young Act Up day I used to sit in the garden of the LGBT Community Center in Greenwich Village and chat with Richard Plant, who wrote the pioneering “The Pink Triangle,” one of the first comprehensive academic works to document the Nazi’s systematic persecution of gay men.

A gay, Jewish German who made it the US just in time to save himself, Richard gave me a raw, immediate perspective on the symbol I was already wearing.

It was humbling.
