I'm just barely old enough to remember a few leftover Burma Shave signs on less traveled highways. My dad always loved pointing them out!
I'll tell you, this subversive gay theme is really interesting. This doesn't have anything to do with Burma Shave, but I have a good friend who decorated his getaway cabin in Maine with homoerotic advertising, mostly from magazines, from the mid 20th century. I doubted him a little when he told me what he was planning, but it turned out he had a wealth of material to choose from!
Some of the innuendo in the ads is probably a matter of seeing what one wants to see, but ... with others, you just have to ask yourself how many gay ad men Madison Avenue employed in those days.
Evidently, more than a mere handful! Lol.
Thanks for this cool story!
