I'm an outlier. I didn't learn to read until I was practically in third grade, older than all of my peers. Probably because of undiagnosed learning disabilities connected with my undiagnosed autism. I caught up fast, though, once a very patient teacher decided to sit down with me independently every day and get me over the initial hump. Now I'm a professional writer and read for pleasure in several languages besides my native English. So I guess I did okay! And I never boast about how young I was when I learned to read. 😉
