I’m also fascinated by post-Soviet culture, Valentine, being a Russian speaker and a former Soviet intel analyst in the US Air Force. There’s such a huge spectrum of culture, though. Poland is fairly open and liberal compared to say Georgia or Chechnya, but some people say the Baltic states have quietly become relative havens of tolerance. I have friends who tell me the Czech Republic is all right too. I hear Slovakia has problems.

This boy is going to be OK, I think. He’s hooked up to lots of resources and support. And Poland isn’t that bad, probably about the same as where I grew up in the US in the 70s…
