I'll propose an answer to the question why, but it's an unsatisfying answer, partially because it eats its own tail. From my perspective having been raised in conservative Christian churches, conservative Christians believe their dogma. They sincerely believe that queer people are evil and Satanic. They sincerely believe they have a religious and moral obligation to fight evil and Satan.

Of course, that just poses the question ... Why do they believe such ridiculous things? I don't know. I can't figure it out. I lost the ability to swallow the bullshit when I was 16 years old. It wasn't just queer stuff, it was all the rest of it: The anti-science, the unquestioning dogma, the lack of desire to respect people who believe differently. The overt sexism. The insularity.

Escaping all that made me so happy.

Why people choose to stay in that kind of a world is a perfect mystery to me. I don't get it.
