I'll have to look into that! Speaking of which you should check out the history of Ethiopian Judaism, which is absolutely fascinating and historically separate from rabbinic Judaism. I started reading about it just recently following a few mentions of it that I ran into on Quora. Essentially, Jews in Ethiopia maintained religious beliefs and traditions for close to 2,000 years. Ironically, after being welcomed into Israel and accepted with genuine religious tolerance, the faith began to die out as more and more of the children and grandchildren of Ethiopian Jews began to either secularize or adopt rabbinic Judaism.
