I'd be disagreeing with you, except I remember far too clearly the evening of the 2016 election when I sat in a liberal campus pub in Detroit and assured my Lebanese born friend that Trump would not be able to subvert our Democratic process or substantially work to hurt minorities. I told my naturalized American friend that our democratic traditions and institutions were too strong for anyone to corrupt.

Looking back, I'm shocked I could have been naive enough to say that. Looking forward, I'm frightened.
