I wrote one of my Aunty Jimothy advice columns once on the subject of porn addiction and masturbation. A young guy had written in wanting to know if his failure to ‘get it up' the night before had anything to do with him watching too much PornHub.

So I wrote a long column about how excessive porn use can sometimes cause erectile dysfunction in men, but that it’s not the huge crisis that some scaremongers present it as.

Like usual in my Aunty voice, I injected a good bit of humor into my answer.

Wooooo! You should have seen this one comment I got from a woman who was furious that I was making light of a terrible situation in which people were “cheating” on their partners by masturbating.

That woman was LIVID.

As a gay man, it had never occurred to me that masturbation is cheating. I mean … when one of my first boyfriends was 20, he probably masturbated 3 times a day and had sex with me twice. I didn’t think anything of it. Men, particularly young men, masturbate a LOT.

I think very few men would ever consider masturbation to be cheating -not unless they were doing it intentionally to avoid sex with their partner.

But I guess that’s a different story.
