I wrote an article just a couple days ago about my experience as a gay man living in a rural, conservative part of the country after having spent most of my life in progressive cities.

The focus of the article was on the intense pressure I feel to live in the closet, on how I have to some extent crawled back into the closet because of living actual oppression.

I could have mentioned that the same people who feel free to toss about homophobic slurs in bars and restaurants, who oppose any and all LGBTQ equality measures, who rip down rainbow flags, are the same people who are terrorizing school board meetings because of mask mandates board members are putting in place at the urging of county health care professionals.

A school board president in a district near me recently resigned, afraid of violence. After 22 years serving as a volunteer, he is sincerely afraid that some of the deranged, fragile people who attend meetings and scream at him are actually going to hurt him one day.

It’s stunning to me how stupid and viciously immoral these idiots are. They’re screaming and threatening violence because their children might have to wear a piece of cloth over their face to keep themselves and other children SAFE FROM A VIRUS THAT MIGHT KILL THEM. And the worst harm that might possibly come to these children from wearing a mask is that they did it for no reason. But even so, no harm no foul if that were the case, which it isn’t.

It’s incomprehensible. What the hell is wrong with these people? I’ve seen a lot of insane shit in my life, but this shit really, really takes the cake.

The trouble is, they’re in a majority around here, and not a small majority. That school board president resigned because the majority of his community want to hurt him. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.
