The amount of sex going on in the NYC gay male community in the 1990s, especially among HIV activist types like myself, was phenomenal.

I think that humans are wired to become more sexual when faced with great existential threat. I think it’s instinct.

I don’t know that. But I’d bet that there’s something to it. I do know that you’re right about your observations with respect to the amount of sex going on during the worst of the epidemic.

Those of us in Act Up and Queer Nation during that era understood the reality. Counterintuitively, we worked to reopen the gay sex clubs. Because we thought it was the smart thing to do. We couldn’t pretend that abstinence was the answer. We knew too clearly that it wasn’t.
