I write about the problem from time to time. It’s tough to get people motivated, because even though we now have the medical means to eliminate HIV circulation, it’s only marginalized people who stand to benefit from doing that.
The people today who are most at risk from HIV are Black, Hispanic, gay, bisexual, transgender, or IV drug users.
People in the rural South are particularly at risk, and experts say it’s because those areas tend to have the most racist healthcare systems.
The reason HIV still circulates in the United States and the reason people still get AIDS is because we will not muster the political will to spend the money to end it. Because it doesn’t benefit straight white people.
There are a few more complexities than that, but that’s the crux of the matter.
