I witnessed plenty of revivals as a kid, including tent rerivals led by a famous traveling evangelist my dad invited to our church.

Even as a child, I recognized I was witnessing some sort of mob psychology, not that I would have used those words. I mean, I would listen to my dad in his office strategizing with the evangelist over what issues to hit and how to evoke the most passionate responses.

If they had to plan it all thoroughly, I wondered, was the hand of God responsible for the crowds response, or were those two men responsible.

I wasn't sure of the answer then, but I am now.
