I was raised as a rather mainstream Baptist, but my experiences were very much like yours, differing by degree rather than by substance.

We weren't supposed to have people from the "world" as our friends, we weren't supposed to watch Hollywood movies, we certainly weren't allowed to dance. And even women taught in Sunday school that women are to be subject to men.

People don't call mainstream Baptists cult members, but I'm really not sure why.

Maybe because the clothing that women wear is allowed to be in color.
