I used to live in Berlin before Germany was reunited, and most days I passed the abandoned Reichstag on my way to or from work.

Sometimes I got close enough to make out bullet holes in the facade.

I remember thinking how fortunate I was to be an American, to know our institutions and places of government were rock stable.

That’s changed. We have allowed ourselves to come to a very bad place.
