I think your comment is actually pretty important. People who knew Ratzinger agree that he was a very unpleasant man, mostly devoid of compassion or kindness. He didn't earn the God's Rottweiler sobriquet for nothing. I'm not a big fan of Pope Francis, but I do agree with him about the problems inherent in "clericalism," the elevation of Catholic priests to positions of great authority, of the idea that they should not be questioned or disobeyed.

If anyone illustrates the problems of clericalism and its inherent authoritarianism, it's Pope Benedict.

In a more healthy Church, his bullying ways would have disqualified him from service.
