I think what happened is that a combination of “boys will be boys” thinking and a desire to protect a very successful football team led to sweeping things under the rug.

Once everything went loudly public, school officials changed their tune. Which is sad. Because if it hadn’t gone public, as is the more usual course of things, the rug sweeping would have worked.
