I think we usually get two couples due to keeping two well separated feeding areas on the property, on different sides of the house. One couple likes one side, the other couple hangs out on the other side. With occasional transgressions!

It sounds to me like Mr. flew off to avoid Mrs.'s quite justified beak-lashing about not sharing.
