I think part of the unspoken premise of my position, though, is that DADT was not progress. Many gay people I served with in the military had their careers and lives destroyed by DADT, because while it was passed with progressive intent, it unleashed a regressive wave of persecution. (The reason being that the bill greatly lowered the burden of proof commanders needed to punish people for being gay.)

Thousands and thousands of people suffered because lawmakers passed a defective bill that caused the opposite of what they were intending.
