I think maybe, Kay, that Coop is caught up in the futility of intercessory prayer, resisting the idea for the many reasons you explained so well, while not understanding that what many people mean by prayer is something very different, a spiritual exercise that has nothing to do with wish granting. Or at least, so guesses this grumpy old atheist who understands that different people value prayer for different reasons.
