I think it's interesting that I read your essay immediately after leaving a comment to Elle Beau's latest piece in which I noted that I often observe transgender people consciously breaking gender stereotypes while embracing their gender, even though breaking stereotypes can come at a high personal cost.

If Pamela Paul doesn't know this about trans people, she's not qualified to be writing about trans issues, especially in a prominent national forum, even if she's pretending not to be writing about trans issues.

If she does know but doesn't care, then "not qualified" is too generous a description.
