I think it's always been a little bit like that, at least during my lifetime, and I have some of the same memories you have.

Remember when, "My country right or wrong" was an unironic affirmation of patriotism? I don't think you hear people say that anymore, but the sentiment remains, and I believe your sports-team metaphor is spot on.
