I think I’m fortunate, Peter, to have lived in different places. Manhattan and Montreal, each of which I called home for years, are among the most gay-friendly cities in the world.

Detroit is so-so, depending on the neighborhood. You can stay in progressive enclaves and have a very Manhattan experience, but venturing outside progressive neighboods reveals something altogether different.

Where I live now in rural Michigan — well, let’s just say no rainbow flags fly anywhere, not even in June.

If I had stayed in Manhattan or Montreal, maybe I wouldn’t understand how things are elsewhere.

There but for the grace of God…
