I think his lawyer's comment about family is an intentional barb, and a well-directed one. Firefighters like to call their colleagues family members, and they like to say that firefighting shifts are families.

That's a romantic notion they elevate as part of the mythos of firefighting.

Clearly, having racist colleagues and a racist boss shatters that myth.

I hope the firefighting community in Rochester feels great shame for their actions.
