I think a key distinction here is that support the law does not equal support for same-sex marriage. In its final version, the proposed law includes guarantees that religious institutions that discriminate against same-sex married couples will not face serious legal jeopardy.

I think that’s the kind of compromise that made the LDS Church was willing to support the law. They likely conclude that same-sex marriage will be the law of the land from now on, and they seek to indemnify themselves from not respecting it within their communities.

I’m not angry that they support the bill, but I am sad recognizing that Mormon LGBTQ people still face being cut off from the communities they were born into.
