I suspect that if you lived in the United States or closely followed U.S. current events and politics that you would not be so sanguine about the state of victory for same-sex marriage.

Several members of our Supreme Court have expressed interest in overturning Obergefell, and if that were to happen, same-sex marriage would be unavailable to people living in many of our states, affecting nearly half of our population. Republican politicians have been quite clear they'd be happy with that outcome, just as they have been quite clear that they would be happy to eliminate equal rights protections for many or most members of gender and sexual minorities.

This sudden shift in public opinion is highly unusual, especially given it took place in the space of only one year – when the trend had been in the opposite direction for many years before.

I'm not nearly as willing to write it off as inconsequential as you seem to be.
