I suppose some people might be surprised that progressive, pro-LGBTQ attitudes existed among white men born in the mid 20th century, but that sort of thinking is more than a little ahistorical. In fact, pro-LGBTQ sentiment has existed rather strongly among a liberal element of society since at least the early 20th century, and white men have always been members of that element.

I published a story just last week about a white man who wrote the play "The God of Vengeance" in 1907. The play was controversial because it positively portrayed a lesbian couple. In 1923, a cast performing the play on Broadway were arrested and convicted on obscenities charges.

Today, a school board in Florida have banned students from mounting a play about "The God of Vengeance."
