I saw that "Very very naughty" ad yesterday, and it resonated powerfully with me.

Because the central GOP messaging this year really is creepy and weird. Republicans really ARE obsessed with the intimate and reproductive lives of strangers.

They're running on being obsessed with what people do in their bedrooms, what decisions they make about having or not having children, and whether or not they identify as transgender.

I just wrote a story about a bunch of right-wing conservatives calling a little boy a fag on YouTube because he loves gymnastics and Simone Biles, and because his voice his high pitched and lilting. I'm sorry, but attacking a child over what they perceive as his sexual orientation is deeply weird.

I'm thinking about a child in the Miami area who is transgender. She transitioned in second grade, so by the time she entered high school last year, almost none of her classmates knew she was trans.

She made lots of friends and became pretty popular, being elected as a homecoming princess. Her mom says she absolutely loved high school.

Then she joined the girls volleyball team, and somebody who remembered that she'd started first grade identifying as a boy made a huge stink. She wasn't any kind of it competitive threat to any girl anywhere. She'd never gone through male puberty and she started female puberty late.

Her former coach calls her small and slight, much smaller than most of her teammates. She sat the bench most of the time.

But that didn't matter to community GOP leaders. Outrage ensued. She and her family were attacked in vicious, dehumanizing terms.

The school board got involved. Community members showed up and screamed about a 14-year-old girl playing volleyball, or rather not playing volleyball but sitting the bench.

Things got so heated that she withdrew from school entirely. She says she's not going back because she can't face all the community hate.

Let me just say that community leaders, Republican leaders, who are attacking a 14-year-old girl are deeply weird.

They're obsessed, and for no legitimate reason other than they don't like trans people.

They're willing to leverage their dislike so much that they justified destroying a child's education.

That's weird, and I hope more people think about that.
