I saw a tweet yesterday by the former Republican Attorney General of Kansas. He was complaining that President Biden (in the State of the Union address) mentioned a federal initiative that's mandating and funding replacement of lead pipes in the water supply. The former Kansas AG, who is still a power player in the state GOP, complained that the federal initiative harms states rights, and wrongly claimed that it's an "unfunded mandate." (In fact, a bipartisan measure passed Congress in 2022 to fund the work.) Jaw-droppingly, the GOP leader suggested that lead in water is not all that concerning.
He was roasted on Twitter. Thousands of people called him out for his false statements, but many more questioned his priorities and Republican policy priorities.
Kansans from both the left and the right seemed appalled that "states rights" would trump safe drinking water.
How do you win elections like that?
