I rejoice when I hear about a loving, decent person leaving an ancient Church that’s using its traditions and theologies to hurt people

Sadly, it doesn’t happen often enough.

Case in point, according to the Pew Research Center, somewhere north of 70% of American Roman Catholics support full equality for LGBTQ people, and disagree with official Catholic doctrine.

Yet, according to the Human Rights Campaign, the American Conference of Catholic Bishops and other Catholic bodies spend millions of dollars a year in in the US at the state and federal level to fight against equal rights for LGBTQ people.

Where are those millions coming from?

Well, clearly, the money is landing in church collection baskets, donated by that large majority of Catholics with don’t approve of what the bishops are going to do with the money.

I don’t get it.

I don’t get how good decent people can belong to and support a Church whose leaders do things they oppose, and whose bigotry can fairly be described as evil.
