I really love your concept of active apathy, Jamie. Our cis-het friends, neighbors and family, after all, like us because of who we are as people. Most of us, not even activist types, run around thinking about important issues all the time. We're taking care of our jobs, our artistic pursuits, our families. We're learning crazy things about our fathers. Lol!
It's a lot harder to tell our ordinary stories sometimes, maybe because we're afraid they're not compelling or they're not important enough.
But in this article, you've really driven home how important they actually are.
Without ordinary stories, without active empathy, can we LGBTQ people truly step out of the margins?
