I read Quora every night before bed. (Because I'm a huge nerd.) The Quora algorithm knows I'm interested in ancient history, human origins, and historical linguistics. So, I get very little in my feed about religious matters, which the nerd in me finds boring.

Nonetheless, last night, just like most nights, an answer I was reading (about a highly technical linguistics subject having to do with the Semitic language family) got attacked by a group of devout conservative Christians.

The comments section should have been interesting, because the answer was written by an esteemed academic, and some very knowledgeable people were digging into some of his details, either asking for clarifications or disputing some of his conclusions. Fascinating!

But serious responses ended up getting drowned out by Christians shouting that the linguistics professor doesn't know what he's talking about — because the Bible already tells us what happened.

These were amazingly ignorant people. They had no clue what they were talking about. The clearly hadn't even understood what they read. They didn't have the technical vocabulary or the knowledge background for it. They weren't just wrong, they weren't even talking about the same thing.

Their arrogance, however, seemed to preclude them from recognizing their profound ignorance. It also precluded them from being quiet or from clicking on dozens of cited links that might have helped them actually learn something.
