I read Lawn Boy because of the controversy, and I ended up loving every minute of it. It's a thoroughly positive, constructive novel that I would think any parent would be delighted to have a teenager read. Objections to it are not just baffling, but frightening and disheartening. The only thing people seem to have against it is that the 20-something protagonist discovers late in the novel that he's gay. And that's enough to bring the witch hunters out.
