"I quite honestly don’t care if he is gay, if he is, then that’s fine. The truly big deal here is the raw hypocrisy. He has been openly and violently an opponent of gay people — his hypocrisy is the issue."

Nicely balanced. There are plenty of reasons to despise this guy, including his hypocrisy, but it's really easy to tip over into gay bashing when criticizing him. Twitter is full of that right now. I understand people don't like him and they're deliriously happy to be able to make fun of him, but I wish they could hear themselves. They sound like playground bullies going after the gay kid for being gay.

This happens a lot, recently with Lindsey Graham, who is by most reports a closeted gay man well known in male escort circles in Washington DC. I once wrote an article asking people to please refrain from gay bashing when they expose Graham's hypocrisy. A lot of people seem to have a hard time even understanding what I was saying. They were too busy lobbing insults at Graham rooted in ugly homophobia.
