I published a story yesterday about a 12-year-old kid in Wyoming whose school anti-bullying play got canceled because of his small part in a scene asking people not to bully gay kids.

That's a pretty important topic in Wyoming where the LGBTQ youth suicide-attempt rate is about double the national average, which is already shockingly high. LGBTQ adolescents are far more likely to think about or attempt suicide than their cis/straight peers, and in Wyoming, a distressing 43% of LGBTQ use report having "seriously considered" suicide in the past year.

The Wyoming department of health says that the suicide rate, which coincides with a high self-harm rate, is the result of adolescents not feeling truly connected to their communities and families. Hm ......

But this kid's principal and district superintendent canceled the play over that scene, commenting that it's not a good fit with community values. (The superintendent also complained that the play wasn't "entertaining" enough.)

The subtext to my story is that the fierce opposition to the play in the community comes from conservative Christians, including the principal and the superintendent who are outspoken conservative Christians.

I didn't write about any of that, I didn't write about the religious aspect of the story, but I can't help but ask myself what would Jesus do in a situation where kids were killing themselves.

I sure don't think he would have canceled efforts to make things better. I don't know how conservative Christians can live with themselves. Their faith traditions are so evil and disgusting. Today, they scream and shout and have hissy fits if anyone suggests that we LGBTQ people are just ordinary but minority variants of human beings.

I can't for the life of me understand how these vicious people can square their evil faith traditions with the teachings of Jesus.

I guess it just goes to show that humans can justify any kind of sickening behavior with religion if they truly want to.
