I promote Medium stories on Twitter every day, and I'm seeing this increasing anti-trans atmosphere up close and personal. It's ugly, and it's getting worse.
My latest story on Medium is about a school librarian in Tennessee who ran into a bunch of trouble for reading inclusive Mother's Day books to children. She read about a male bear who raised a clutch of goslings. She read about a gay couple whose daughter was afraid she wouldn't be welcome at a Mother's Day party.
I wrote the story to ask people to find a little more love in their hearts for children who don't have both a mother and a father.
When I promoted that story on Twitter, it took only moments before someone came along and accused me of supporting "the genital mutilation of children," calling me a "pedopath Democrat." (There are no trans people or issues in the story I wrote, and I'm not particularly enamored of the Democratic Party these days.)
This person happened to have a blue check, whatever that means now. I reported the comment, and in years past it would have been deleted pretty quickly.
It wasn't deleted this time, and none of my recent reports of similar abusive tweets have been deleted.
I still use Twitter because I spent years developing a fair number of followers there. But it's such a cess pit, and it's getting worse fast.
