I never knew any of this about Rose, but as a gay boy, something about Farmer Boy resonated with me. Even when I was too young to grasp sexuality, I felt a sort of magnetic pull toward the Almonzo of the novel.

Perhaps this was an inevitable product of my sexual orientation, but I have to ask myself now if somehow a queer sensibility didn’t leak through Rose’s writing.
