I might go so far as to say that people like Ben Shapiro remain intentionally ignorant so they can continue being malicious. Shapiro clearly dislikes LGBTQ people on a deeply personal, visceral level. He is a schoolyard bully grown up and with a big platform— little different from a group of boys I watched on video this morning beating down a 14-year-old queer kid in Florida.

Those boys might grow out of their ignorance. Shapiro never did, and he clearly does not want to. He doesn't have to be ignorant, but he chooses to be.

Because he wants to remain malicious.
