I make about 1,000 on Medium most months from the Partner Program. Is that real money? I dunno.

I don’t sell courses or peach defuzzers. ;-)

I spent a year on Medium posting my stories for free. I wrote because I thought I had something to say, not because I wanted to get paid. I established a pretty good reader base in my niche, which is LGBTQ life, issues, and activism. Essays and fiction.

Then toward the beginning of this year, Medium changed the algorithms around and stopped distributing free stories. So, I shrugged my shoulders and joined the Partner Program, expecting I’d probably make a few bucks, but not enough to really be significant.

Boy, was I ever surprised.

I don’t really have any tips to share or instructions about how I managed to make money on Medium, because I don’t know how I managed.

I read other people’s stories that are at least as good as mine, and I see they don’t get much response, and I don’t know why that is.

I count myself lucky that I found a reader base, or that they found me.

All I can do is write the most authentic stories I know how to write. And then hope people read them. Often (knock on wood!) they do.

Jim
