I lived in West Berlin most of the 80s, and I made it to the East several times before that celebrated 9th of November. Monochrome indeed. I’ve always described it as grey, given the drab concrete architecture that dominated post-war construction.

But your observation about lack of advertising is spot on. I wonder what that never explicitly occurred to me before? So obvious.
