I live in northern Michigan. It’s one of the most racist places I’ve ever lived, and I once lived in Alabama.

The idea that American racism is limited to the South or is more prevalent there is just not true at all.

I grew up in Ohio, where racism was fundamental and ingrained in the culture.

I went to high school and college in Iowa. Ditto.

Doing something about racism requires that we see it. Acknowledge it. Face up to it.

And lots of us nice Midwestern folks are right up at the front of the line for people who need to act.
