I learned that a day or so after I wrote the comment to Shannon’s story. Really surprised me to discover they’re gay, because it means they’ve thought about outing issues many times over their careers. It’s not like they’ve never had to wrestle with serious “do we or don’t we” questions, or at least thought about them when they came up at other outlets. Because sometimes (but only very rarely and definitely not in this case) outing can be considered ethical.
Their move is something we might forgive in a clueless, privileged layman, but not in a trained journalist, and most especially not in a gay journalist.
